Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios is looking to build its own IP, and currently has two new projects in the pipeline.
In a new community update on Steam, the Baldur’s Gate 3 studio has stated that, as an independent studio since 1996, it values the freedom to follow its creativity wherever it leads. In this case, after much discussion and rumination, the developer has decided to seize this opportunity to develop its own IPs. Larian Studios is currently working on two brand new projects.
Furthermore, with regards to the new projects, Larian Studios stated that it’s still early days, and that it will share more information later down the line. It further stated that, even as the development team’s focus turns to these new games, the sensibilities that brought fans Baldur’s Gate 3 are alive and well at the studio.
A special note from Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke shared his excitement for one of the studio’s new projects. “I don’t know if we’re going to pull it off, but looking at our narrative, visual and gameplay plans, I think what we’re working on now will be our best work ever,” he said. “I get excited like a kid watching the key imagery, want to show it to everyone now and grumble in frustration at having to wait until it’s actually all working. Yes, it’s hype but it’s hype because it really looks and feels good.”
Recently, during an interview, Baldur’s Gate 3 Director of Publishing Michael Douse talked about the hurdles Larian Studios had to face, during the game’s development. He mentioned that those who are working on anything outside of the PC space have to “advocate very heavily for what you’re doing.” According to him, the game industry is still “obsessed” with certain genres. “If you’re a guy whose job it is to say, ‘Well, what projects should we do and what are the risks?’, you’re going to look at our game and go, well, ‘It’s a fucking CRPG. Why would we take a bet on this?’” Douse believes the industry at large should start taking more bets instead of deeming risky ventures as expensive.
