Bayonetta 3 is by all accounts, a decent hit for Nintendo despite a significant controversy that plagued the game’s pre-launch timeline.
Just before the release of the game, the original voice actor for Bayonetta, Hellena Taylor shared a video on Twitter revealing that she was only offered $4,000 to return and voice her part in Bayonetta 3. This was later confirmed to be incomplete information and as more details began to emerge, Taylor clarified that her initial offer was $10,000 for the whole game was bumped up to $15,000.
Hellena Taylor also called for a boycott of the game and requested the fans to donate any money they intended to use to purchase the game to a charity.
Now that Bayonetta 3 has been released officially, we can understand the impact that Taylor’s call for a boycott had on the game.
Bayonetta 3 is currently trending in the Top 3 best-selling games on Amazon US. It is also charting at number 7 on Amazon UK suggesting that its sales haven’t been affected that much by the call for a boycott.
The same is true for digital copies of the game. On the Nintendo Store, it is the best-selling new game ahead of Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope.
Bayonetta 3 has also received rave reviews from critics. It is currently the 8th best-reviewed game of 2022 on all major platforms despite being a Nintendo exclusive. It is tied to Horizon Forbidden West with a critic average score of 88/100 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The only major game ahead of it is Elden Ring.
