Live A Live has a lovely remake on the Nintendo Switch with HD-2D visuals making it an impressive-looking game. This couldn’t be possible without Nintendo’s involvement.
In a new interview, the game’s director mentions that this remake wouldn’t be possible without Nintendo involving them in its production. It was the first game that Takashi Tokita had directed at Square Enix. While it wasn’t commercially successful, he still recognized its importance in his career.
The offer to remake the game came from Nintendo who wanted to celebrate its 20th anniversary by putting the original release on the Virtual Console. This led to Square Enix greenlighting a remake of the game with HD-2D visuals.
They had to take extra care of the remake and work on the dialogue in a purposeful way so that the timing and music line up. They also broke down a simple text box into two depending on the scenario and elevated the experience of playing the game.

Live A Live isn’t without its issues, occasionally reminding us of its dated roots. For a majority of the experience, however, it is a game JRPG fans cannot miss, whether it’s for the unique approach to storytelling, the varied mechanics, or the tense battles.
Live A Live is available now exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
