NetEase Games is currently working on a brand new AAA shooter based on a Marvel IP called Marvel Rivals, as per the latest report.
According to Twitter/X user Kurakasis, NetEase is working on a AAA first-person shooter set in the Marvel universe, titled Marvel Rivals. The game is said to be in development for PC, consoles, and mobile platforms.
According to the source, Marvel Rivals is scheduled to be announced this year in 2024. They mentioned that they are “100 percent” sure about the game’s title, development studio, and year of announcement. However, they also said that they cannot guarantee that it is a first-person shooter, as there may be other Marvel projects in development at NetEase that they are not aware of.
Thestreamr has reported, however, that Marvel Rivals is like Overwatch with Marvel characters in a 6 vs 6 multiplayer environment. They claims that it is a third-person shooter rather than an FPS, as seen by them in the screenshots provided to them their source. They also claim that while the game is internally referred to as Marvel Rivals, its official title remains unconfirmed. According to the source, the game is currently set for release on PC, with potential console and mobile versions later on, given NetEase’s track record.
An Overwatch-style Marvel themed third-person PvP shooter sounds compelling on paper, but it’s tough to get excited about the game until it seen in action. If the execution is worthwhile, it has the potential to become a successful live service title with fans of both Marvel and Overwatch.
As always, we encourage our readers to take such rumors and speculation with a grain of salt until there is confirmation via official channels.
NetEase’s previous live service game based on a Marvel IP is Marvel Super War, a free-to-play third-person multiplayer online battle arena game that pits two teams of 5 against each other.
