Heart Machine’s critically acclaimed science fiction adventure platformer game, Solar Ash, is set to be released for the Nintendo Switch after being rated by PEGI with a 12+ age restriction. However, it has also received a Mature classification in Australia. This marks the first time the game has been rated for the Nintendo Switch, leading fans to speculate that an announcement regarding its release on the platform is imminent.
Solar Ash was developed by Heart Machine and published by Annapurna Interactive. The game was first released in December 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows, and later on Steam in December 2022, as well as on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S in Q4 2022.
The game’s story centers around Rei, a Voidrunner who must navigate a neon-colored landscape to save her planet from destruction. The gameplay emphasizes traversal over combat, with players using energy slashes and a phase-shifted and hard light sword to attack enemies while avoiding obstacles. Lead developer Alx Preston has stated that “the traversal takes precedence, and the combat is kind of intermingled with that traversal.”
Solar Ash explores themes of trauma and resilience in a fictional universe that was previously featured in Heart Machine’s popular title, Hyper Light Drifter. The game promises to be distinguished from its predecessor with a “whole new set of incredible tech and key innovations,” according to Preston.
The game’s release was originally set for October 26, 2021, but was delayed to December 2, 2021, due to the need for additional polishing and bug fixes. Now that it is finally rated, fans eagerly await the release of Solar Ash for the Nintendo Switch, which will provide a new platform for players to explore this captivating sci-fi adventure.
