Virtuos is currently working on a multiplatform Unreal Engine 5 remake, which is rumored to be The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
According to the LinkedIn profile of Oleksii Moskovchenko, Technical Art Director at Virtuos, the studio is working on an unannounced PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC remake in Unreal Engine 5. While the name of the title is not mentioned, it has previously been rumored that the game is none other than Bethesda Game Studios’ The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
A former employee of Virtuos, who’s identity was verified by a Reddit mod, the studio is working on a project codenamed “Altar”, which is a remaster/remake of Oblivion. They mentioned that the discussion for it being a full remake are still ongoing at the studio.
According to them, the game is being developed using a pairing system, meaning that the remake will run both an Unreal Engine 5 project and the old Oblivion project. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the Unreal Engine 5 project, but most of the gameplay and physics are still done on the original Oblivion engine. They mentioned that the game should be released by the end of 2024 or early in 2025, depending mostly on if it’s a remake or remaster.
For the uninitiated, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is the fourth entry in The Elder Scrolls series, succeeding Morrowind in 2002. It was originally released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360, later followed by PlayStation 3 in 2007. Set in the fictional province of Cyrodiil, the main story focuses on the player character’s quest to stop a fanatical cult, called the Mythic Dawn, from opening portals to the demonic realm of Oblivion. Following the series’ tradition, Oblivion maintains an open-world format, allowing players to explore the game world freely and pursue the main storyline at their discretion. At the beginning, players opt for seven major skills, while the rest are classified as minor skills.
