Sega and Sonic Team are currently working on the unannounced Sonic Frontiers 2, based on the latest rumor.
According to Twitter/X insider DanielRPK, development on Sonic Frontiers 2 is already underway. As for whether it’s a direct sequel to Sonic Frontiers or a fresh take on 3D Sonic gameplay remains to be seen, as the game may be end up with a different title altogether. The game is likely fairly early in the development process, and the insider has very little information to share about it at this point.
While Sonic Frontiers got a mixed reception from game critics, it ended up resonating with fans, as it sold over 3.5 million copies as of May, 2023. Aspects of the game that made the game divisive among critics include technical issues, controls and combat. With the sequel, Sega’s Sonic Team will likely attempt to refine or redesign these elements. At this point, it’s not known whether Sonic Frontiers 2 will be a cross-gen title like its predecessor or one that will focus on current-gen console hardware.
Sonic Frontiers was released for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 8, 2022. It is an action-adventure game featuring Sonic in a 3D platformer environment. Players traverse the Starfall Islands, which include diverse biomes such as flowery fields, forests, ancient ruins, and deserts, in search of Chaos Emeralds and to uncover the islands’ mysteries. Sonic retains familiar abilities like high-speed running, ring collection, rail grinding, and homing attacks. Additional moves like double jumping, sidestepping, drop dashing, and boosting can be used if sufficient energy is available. New features include combat maneuvers, wall running, and using the Cyloop to create light circles to interact with objects. The Cyloop’s functionality can be customized by drawing specific shapes, like infinity symbols, enabling temporary boosts. Sonic can also temporarily boost when collecting the maximum number of rings.
