The unannounced remake of Square Enix’s classic role-playing game, Final Fantasy IX, is set to be a multiplatform title that is “not very ambitious”, based on the latest rumor.
According to Twitter/X insider Silknigth, the rumored Final Fantasy IX remake will not be a PlayStation console exclusive, and is also planned for Xbox. When asked whether Sony pursued exclusivity and was turned down, they responded by saying that it’s difficult for Square Enix and Sony not to reach an agreement. However, they added that, at the moment in the generation, it’s not necessary for all games to have a contract. As per them, there are future-oriented thoughts right now.
The insider mentioned that the Final Fantasy IX remake project is not very ambitious, suggesting that it won’t have the budget and production values seen in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. The same has also been said regarding the project by other insiders. Jeff Grubb, who is known for his sources in the game industry, had also mentioned that it will be more of a graphical facelift rather than being a re-imagined take on the original. As per him, the combat will likely remain turn-based, rather than being action-focused like that of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series.
Silknigth was also asked whether Sony will eventually acquire or invest into Square Enix. In response, the insider stated that the relationship between Square Enix and Sony doesn’t require it to be led to a future acquisition. They mentioned that both companies come together to bring ambitious projects to life, all thanks to the longstanding partnership that they have built over the years.
On whether the new Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu and Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recent public handshake was more of a show rather than an actual partnership, the insider said that the approach will undoubtedly help in bringing some of the company’s titles to Xbox. However, it doesn’t change Square Enix and Sony’s plans to continue working together on more titles designed for PlayStation consoles.
