Nintendo is reportedly expanding its adults-only Nintendo 64 Switch Online app to Australia. This app, which was first launched in Japan, is designed to separate adult-rated games from the standard Nintendo 64 catalog available on the Switch Online platform.
In Japan, the Nintendo 64 Switch Online 18+ app made its debut with the inclusion of two iconic Rare titles, GoldenEye 007 and Jet Force Gemini. These games necessitated a separate app because of their mature themes. This set a precedent in how Nintendo handles adult-rated content.
This move follows the Western release of GoldenEye 007, including in Australia. It indicates a broader strategy to cater to adult gamers. The exact lineup of titles for this exclusive app in Australia is yet to be disclosed.
The recent rating submission and the specifics of the app’s naming convention suggest that this could be an extension of the Japanese app. Yet, the MA rating aligns with some N64 titles that retained their adult ratings, hinting at the possibility of games like Perfect Dark requiring this 18+ platform for their release on Nintendo Switch Online.
The Nintendo Switch Online service added Nintendo 64 games on October 25, 2021, expanding its offerings significantly. Initially, it featured nine classic titles, which were primarily North American NTSC releases running at 60 Hz. However, some European versions were also available at the original PAL 50 Hz in a few cases. Multiple languages were supported, and Japan-exclusive games rated Z by the CERO rating board were accessible through a separate 18+ application in Japan.
As of November 30, 2023, the collection of Nintendo 64 games on the Nintendo Switch Online service has grown to 29 titles, featuring a wide range of genres and publishers. Popular games like Dr. Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Super Mario 64 were joined by later additions such as Paper Mario, Banjo-Kazooie, and the Mario Party series.
However, the availability of these games varies by region. In North America, PAL regions, and Korea, 26 titles are available, including two exclusives. In Japan and Hong Kong, 27 games are available, including two regional exclusives. Some games offer both 60 Hz and 50 Hz versions.
